Description

Product Overview

The SUS2040SB is a small-roller double-pitch stainless steel sprocket designed for No.2040S SS (2040 SS) roller chain running on a 25.4 mm pitch. Double-pitch chain drives use a chain with twice the link pitch of a standard chain, resulting in fewer, lighter sprocket teeth for the same drive ratio — an arrangement that reduces weight, lowers rotating mass, and cuts noise on light-load conveyor applications where speed is moderate and mass matters.

Manufactured in 304-grade stainless steel at our Hangzhou facility, the SUS2040SB covers effective tooth counts from 9½ to 12½ — the “half-tooth” notation reflecting that double-pitch sprockets engage every other roller. This design is a direct-fit replacement for Tsubaki 2040S, Renold double-pitch 40-series, and equivalent Rexnord 2040 stainless components, supplied factory-direct without European or Japanese distributor markups.

Double-Pitch Technology Explained

In a standard roller chain, every link has a roller that contacts a sprocket tooth. In a double-pitch chain, the pitch (distance between pin centres) is doubled, meaning rollers appear every second link rather than every link. The sprocket is designed accordingly — the tooth count describes the number of teeth that engage rollers, but the physical sprocket has additional “dummy” spaces between engaging teeth.

The practical result: at any given conveying speed, the chain runs slower relative to the sprocket, reducing wear and noise. The sprocket itself is smaller and lighter than an equivalent standard-pitch sprocket of the same chain speed. These properties make double-pitch drives the first choice for overhead conveying systems, light-duty sorting lines, and any application where minimising weight and noise matters more than maximising power density.

Key Performance Features

🔇
Low Noise Operation
Double-pitch chain engagement produces significantly lower roller-impact noise than standard-pitch at equivalent conveying speeds — ideal for food-retail and pharmaceutical environments.
💧
Full Corrosion Resistance
304 stainless construction with post-machining passivation resists CIP chemicals, steam, and wash-down cycles without surface degradation.
⚖️
Reduced Rotating Mass
Fewer, longer-span chain links and a lighter sprocket hub lower inertial loads on conveyor drive motors — reducing energy consumption on long runs.
🎯
Precision Bore Options
H7 bore tolerance as standard. Custom bore, keyway, and set-screw configurations available with 7–12 day lead time from drawing confirmation.

Typical Applications

Application Industry Example Key Requirement
Light-duty overhead conveyors Retail, e-commerce, garment hanging systems Low noise, low weight
Food packaging lines Bakery, confectionery, dairy conveyors Corrosion resistance, hygiene
Pharmaceutical equipment Tablet and capsule conveying, labelling Zero contamination
Automotive assembly lines Parts conveyors, overhead trolley systems Low inertia, quiet operation
Electronics manufacturing PCB conveyors, component sorting lines Precision, low vibration

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does “effective teeth” mean on a double-pitch sprocket?+
In a double-pitch sprocket, only every other tooth engages a roller — these are the “effective” teeth. A 9½T sprocket has either 9 or 10 physical teeth (the ½ indicates a design quirk at the even/odd transition), but only 9 or 10 rollers engage per revolution. This allows the use of a smaller, lighter sprocket for a given chain speed compared to standard-pitch.
2. Can SUS2040SB run on standard No.40 roller chain?+
No. SUS2040SB is designed for double-pitch No.2040S chain (25.4 mm pitch, small roller). Standard No.40 chain has the same pitch but a different roller engagement pattern and link geometry. Always pair with the correct double-pitch chain.
3. Is 316L stainless available for wash-down or marine environments?+
Yes. All SUS2040SB configurations can be produced in 316L stainless steel on request. 316L offers superior pitting resistance in chloride-rich environments. Pricing is approximately 20% above the 304 equivalent.
4. What bore sizes are available as standard stock?+
Standard stock bores for SUS2040SB are 13 mm across all tooth counts. Custom bores from 15 mm to the maximum listed are available with a short machining lead time.
5. Can you supply matching idler sprockets?+
Yes. Idler-bore versions of SUS2040SB (with a plain bore and no keyway) are available for tensioner and guide roles. Specify “idler” or “plain bore” when ordering.
